In-between the Outer Banks and the Inner Banks are a series of sounds including the Pamlico, Albemarle, Croatan, Roanoke and Currituck Sounds. If you are on the Outer Banks side of these sounds you will experience panoramic open water views and spectacular sunsets. On the Inner Banks Side of the sounds you can experience open water views and sunrises over the water.

Soundside homes can generate substantial rental income but for the most part are rsidential in nature. The calm sound water is perfect for boating, kayaking, fishing and other watersports. Typically, you are allowed to have a dock out over the water and steps into the water for swimming.

While the weather on the sounds is somewhat milder than out on the Atlantic Ocean the wind can still kick up some sizeable waves over the vast expanse of the larger sounds. These waves usually accompany one of the larger storms and are capable of ripping up a dock or knocking a boat off of a boat lift. A couple of simple fixes are take your boat out of the water when a storm is coming and build your dock with something that will let the water through when a wave rises up under the dock. ie. hog slats or fiberglaas dock panels
